The career of a young actor in the Thai entertainment industry typically follows a very strict script. Talent agencies spot promising faces, place them in popular television dramas, and build dedicated fanbases that keep them famous for years. To break away from this safe system at the absolute height of your fame is a massive gamble. Yet, in 2018, Chanon Santinatornkul, affectionately known to millions of fans simply as Nonkul, did exactly that, turning the entire industry on its head.

A year before his big move, Nonkul starred as Bank, a brilliant but struggling student, in the smash-hit thriller Bad Genius. The film was a massive phenomenon, making over $40 million in China alone and becoming the highest-earning Thai film in history. Suddenly, Nonkul was a certified international superstar. He had a golden ticket and a secure spot at Nadao Bangkok, the prestigious agency that had lovingly nurtured his career since his early days in the teen drama Hormones. But when his contract came up for renewal, Nonkul chose a different path. He decided to walk away.
Staying with a major studio offered a guaranteed pipeline of roles, a massive PR team, and a comfortable safety net. Leaving meant losing all of that protection, but it gave Nonkul something he wanted much more: total control over his own life, his roles, and his international dreams.
Nonkul's big dream was always to make it to Hollywood. He knew that a traditional Thai agency, while great at securing local TV roles and product endorsements, wasn't necessarily built to bridge the gap to global markets. By operating independently, Nonkul was free to personally chase roles in mainland China, like the sports drama Blowing in the Wind. He didn't have to worry about a Thai studio’s rigid scheduling or domestic priorities holding him back.
It turns out Nonkul was just ahead of his time. In 2022, Nadao Bangkok shocked the entertainment world by shutting down its talent management division entirely, admitting that the industry had changed and self-management had become the new normal for big stars. What Nonkul tried as a lonely experiment in 2018 became the standard blueprint just a few years later.
By 2023, that small shift turned into a massive wave. A long list of prominent Thai actors decided to leave their management companies to go independent. However, as many discovered, jumping without a net is incredibly risky.
The stars who succeeded usually had a clear plan. For example, popular actor and musician Jeff Satur already ran his own music studio and had a massive global fanbase before he left his agency, making his transition seamless. Other veteran stars like Ter Chantavit and Mai Davika took it a step further, launching their own production firm, Mine Media, to create their own content and manage projects.
On the other side of the coin, going independent without a backup plan can be tough. Leaving an agency often means instantly losing access to major auditions, casting networks, and marketing power. For some actors, the gamble meant moving away from acting altogether to focus on family businesses or full-time social media content creation.
What makes Nonkul’s journey so inspiring is that he did it completely alone, long before it was trendy. To keep his momentum alive in China, he even took on the daunting task of learning his scripts phonetically in Mandarin. He wasn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work to survive in a broader market.
Nearly a decade after his breakout role, Nonkul is still a constant, friendly presence across Thai cinema, television dramas, and international projects. While he hasn't booked that Hollywood blockbuster just yet, his career offers a vital lesson. Nonkul proved that you don't need a massive machine behind you to stay relevant and that with enough hustle, adaptability, a loving family and bravery, you can successfully run your own show.
